Learners:
This Webquest is designed for grades 3-5 as a focused unit on non-fiction text features and how to use them effectively in non-fiction informational text. Students will need prior knowledge on non-fiction text features as the video and infographic in the Process page is only used as a review. Students will work in heterogeneous teams to create a presentation of their choice to communicate classroom procedures and expectations to a new student. Allow students to choose their non-fiction text features they will be in charge of but the list of features allows for easy scaffolding. English Language Learners levels 1-2 can choose lower-level features but will still be able to contribute to the whole project.
Invite your school counselor in to the classroom for a discussion with your students about what a new student needs when they come to a school. This opens up a comfortable, "brainstorming" session in which all students can feel successful.
*Tip for teachers with English Language Learners: use lower level non-fiction texts from the library to further teach non-fiction text features. Allow ELLs to choose their feature in the presentation that they feel most comfortable with.
