The Process
In order to create the best presentation to show our new students how to navigate our room, you will be working in teams of 5 or 6. You will be in HOME groups and you will also break into FEATURES groups. You will create your presentation in your HOME groups but you will fine-tune your specific non-fiction text feature in your FEATURES groups.
1. Activate our background knowledge on Non-Fiction Text Features by watching this short video and by using this infographic.
2. As a class, go to Padlet to brainstorm different topics that a new student would need to know about our classroom. Think of these as "headings." What makes our classroom unique and special from other classrooms? How does our room operate on a daily basis? What are some different procedures, transitions, and behavior systems that we have in place that a new student would need to know?
*Use information from the counselor's visit to help you generate some brainstorming ideas!*
3. In HOME groups, visit these sites and discuss how the information was portrayed using the non-fiction text features. What non-fiction text features do you see? How did these features help deliver information to the audience? Use this note-taking page to help you take notes.

4. In your HOME group, decide what non-fiction text features you want to include in your presentation. Use this Non-Fiction Text Features Presentation Planning Google Doc to create your presentation brainstorming page. In HOME groups, students will assign each other different parts of the presentation to be responsible for. *Please make sure you MAKE A COPY for your group and SHARE your Google Doc with all of your group members and your teacher.
5. Decide as a group which type of presentation tool you would like to use. Remember: think about which type of tool your group is most comfortable with and are most interested in.
6. After groups have planned out their needs for their presentation, go to your FEATURES groups. Any student of "like" features will meet together to collaborate on how to implement their non-fiction feature into their own HOME group presentation. This should only take a few minutes of good discussion.
7. HOME groups will meet together to plan their presentation and implement using the Presentation Rubric as a guideline. Once groups are done, they will present to the class and we will vote on our favorite to be the tool we will use to show to our new students as they come into the class.
